RAM Center (Higgins Lake)- Not Every Storm Is a Crisis: Exploring the Difference

This practical, skills-focused session explores the difference between distress and crisis and why recognizing that difference matters. Participants will use the Ethics and Boundaries framework to practice responding to real-world situations with confidence and clarity. Through discussion and hands-on activities, they’ll learn how to stay grounded, respond within their role, and know when additional support is needed.
Objectives
- Participants will practice recognizing the difference between distress and imminent risk using real-world language and examples from the Ethics and Boundaries framework (focus on understanding meaning, timing, and urgency, not assessment).
- Participants will practice Ethics and Boundaries response skills, including grounding, curiosity, and containment, to stay calm, focused, and within their role during challenging situations (concrete practice: slowing down, exploring meaning, responding without panic).
- Participants will practice choosing appropriate next steps for both distress and crisis situations, including when to pause, when to seek additional support, and how to maintain a supportive relationship (practical skills that reflect what peers do in real-world situations).
