Continuing Education

Every two years on the first day of the month of your certification date.

Examples:
My certification date is November 14, 2009. My CE start date will begin November 1, 2023. My certification will renew/expire on November 1, 2025.

Yes, it is your responsibility to collect documentation and proof of attending trainings. After attending a training, if you believe you did not receive your MDHHS certificate from peer services, check your inbox and/or SPAM folder for the certificate of completion.

No, it is your responsibility to retain records documenting the completion of continuing education (such as certificates of attendance) and submit them all together at one time with the CE record once you have completed all of the requirements.

Documents (certificates, applications, approvals, etc.) must be sent in a word or pdf document/attachment and uploaded to Continuing Education Record Submittal – MiPeers

Your certification expires from the first day of the month of passing your most recent certification.

Example: My PSS certification date is January 10, 2019, and my PRC certification date is August 10, 2021. My CE start date will begin on August 1, 2023. My PSS and PRC certifications will renew/expire on August 1, 2025.

Your CE start date is the first day of the month you were certified. If you were certified January 12th, your CE start date would be January 1st, 2024. You will need to obtain 32 CEs by January 1st, 2026.

When you have completed your 32-hour CE requirement.

All CE information can be found on MiPeers. If you do not meet the requirements and are placed on probation, notifications will be sent to both your home and work email addresses. It is your responsibility to keep MDHHS-peersupport@michigan.gov notified of any changes to your work and home email addresses.

Example: My certification date is October 12, 2018. My CE start date will begin October 1, 2023, and I attended a CE training July 10, 2023. The training would not count towards your CE requirement.  

Yes, you are able to participate in 13 hours of virtual trainings for the CE requirement.

Yes, the ethics training is required to be taken in person and must be provided by the MDHHS Peer Services Area.

No. Due to the volume of outside trainings, we are unable to post trainings that are not provided by the MDHHS Peers Services Area to the MiPeers website.

Your certification will be considered on PROBATION. You have three months past your renewal date to complete any additional trainings needed for the 32 CE requirement.

To support the workforce in meeting the requirements the probationary time frame has been extended to 6 months for your first recertification cycle.

If you are unable to complete the 32 CE requirements within the probationary three-month window, your peer certification will be SUSPENDED. You will have up to the four-year mark of the first day of the month of your certification date to complete the remaining CE requirements. At that time, if the remaining CE requirements have not been completed, your certification status will be changed to revoked.

After four years of no continuing education, your certification status will be changed to REVOKED. You will have to retake the certification training and successfully pass the exam.

Yes. However, your CPSS/CPRC services are no longer reimbursable if your certification status is suspended or rescinded.

No, it is your responsibility to notify your employer of your CE status including probation, suspension and revocation.

No, after four years of no continuing education when a peers’ certification is revoked, you will need to retake the certification training.

One CE is equal to 60 minutes of instruction.

Yes, quarter and half CEs are allowed.

Example: 1.5 CEs will be awarded for a 90-minute training. 1.25 CEs will be awarded for a 75-minute training.

Limited scholarships will be provided to peers who are not working in any capacity. If you do not have employment, you can email MDHHS-peersupport@michigan.gov to receive the scholarship form.

Currently this is not available. We are looking at options to implement in the near future.

Trainings will not be approved for the following:

  • Trainings that offer CEs for homework.
  • Trainings that do not offer a certificate of completion.
  • Trainings that are considered basic worker competencies i.e. recipient rights, communicable disease, confidentiality etc.
  • Trainings rooted in clinical based practices and/or principles.
  • Trainings that are not rooted in recovery practices and/or principles.
  • Partial completion of a training.
  • Missing a flyer or brochure.
  • CE Eligibility application form is not fully completed.
  • Breaks and lunch included in the length of training requested on the CE Eligibility application form.

No, only CEs received during the current renewal cycle will only count toward the current  certification. You will need to receive 32 CEs within each certification renewal cycle.
