SMART Recovery

Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) teaches self-empowerment based on scientific principles and evidence. The recovery program helps people overcome all forms of addictive behaviors.
Upon completion of this three-day virtual program, you will be able to:
- Express confidence to start and facilitate a SMART Recovery meeting.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of the SMART Recovery program and related tools.
- Demonstrate knowledge of how concepts, strategies, and tools support addiction recovery in a support group setting.
- Demonstrate basic facilitation skills as used in a SMART Recovery support group.
- Demonstrate knowledge of how concepts, strategies, and tools support recovery for family and friends.

SMART Recovery Program Overview
SMART Recovery is the leading, evidence-informed approach to overcoming addictive behaviors and leading a balanced life. It is a transformative method of moving from addictive substances and negative behaviors to a life of positive self-regard and willingness to change. The SMART is stigma-free and emphasizes self-empowerment with the guiding principles of self-management, mutual support, choice, evidence-led and person-centered. Attending this training will provide peer support specialist and peer recovery coaches the ability to facilitate SMART meetings in your community to support multiple pathways of recovery.
Presenters:
Alexander A. Carde is an onsite trainer for SMART Recovery and a longtime leader within the SMART Recovery community. He serves as Co-Chair of the Regional Coordinator Committee for North America and Regional Coordinator for New Jersey, facilitates both online and in-person SMART meetings, moderates the SMART Recovery Online Community, and co-hosts SMART Meeting Management sessions with founding president Dr. Joe Gerstein. Through these sessions, held three times each week, he helps answer questions and support facilitators from around the world.
In addition to his work with SMART Recovery, Alexander is the co-founder of the City of Clifton, New Jersey Homeless Task Force and is actively involved in community outreach. He was selected as one of only 25 volunteers recognized during SMART Recovery’s 25th anniversary celebration, an honor chosen by thousands of volunteers worldwide. Alexander also organizes comic and fan conventions in the New York City area, bringing his passion for community building into both his professional and volunteer work.
Eboni Jewel Sears, CPRSS-S, PRSS, has been on her recovery journey since joining the United States Navy more than 18 years ago. She attributes her success to treating her recovery like a marathon and not a sprint. Originally, Sears grew up immersed in the Gullah culture in the Low Country of South Carolina, and over the years, has been a rolling stone, living in more than 30 cities. She currently calls the Las Vegas valley of Nevada home. She has recently completed a graduate certificate in Advanced Addiction Studies, with a specialization in the action-oriented approach of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). Sears is also a Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist and Supervisor, as well as a master life coach.
Eligible for 16 virtual Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Continuing Education credits.
Eligible for 19 National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) approved 19 Continuing Education hours.

Cancellation Policy: Registrations may be transferred to another employee of the same agency upon written request to registration@mipeers.org. Cancellations must be received in writing at least 7 days prior to the date of the training. Failure to cancel registration within the allotted time will result in registration fees being forfeited. Attendance Policy: You must attend the entire training. If you are more than 10 minutes late you will not be allowed to attend as part of the CE requirements. Please note there is absolutely NO driving during the training. If you are driving while attending the training, you will be removed from the training for your own safety. Training guidelines must be read, signed, and returned back to the office before a zoom link is sent to the participant. Attendees must follow the training guidelines.
