Peer Military Culture 101

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the Fundamentals of Military Culture– Identify core values, traditions, and structures that define military life.
  2. Recognize Branch-Specific Differences– Differentiate expectations across military branches.
  3. Explore the Transition Experience– Discuss common challenges service members face when reintegrating into civilian life.
  4. Identify Common Mental Health Concerns– Recognize the impact of service-related stress, PTSD, and other challenges veterans may encounter.
  5. Develop Effective Communication Strategies– Apply culturally competent approaches when engaging with veterans in peer support settings.
  6. Enhance Peer Support Practices– Utilize best practices in peer support to build trust and rapport with veterans.
  7. Address Barriers to Care– Identify systemic, cultural, and personal barriers that prevent veterans from seeking or receiving support.

About the Trainer:

Dr. Kevin Scott is an honorably discharged decorated Marine Veteran of Operation Desert Storm. Academically, he has a Bachelor of Science (Magna Cum Laude) and a Master of Science both in the discipline of Criminal Justice from North Carolina Central University, in Durham, NC. In addition, he earned a doctorate in Community Counseling and Care specializing in Traumatology from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. He also holds national memberships and state certifications in a myriad of mental health spaces including Harvard’s T. H. Chan School of Public Health Executive Leadership Development, National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NACDP), Commission on Correctional Healthcare Professional (CCHP), and Commission on Correctional Healthcare Professional-Mental Health (CCHP-MH).

Eligible for 6.5 MDHHS Continuing Education credits.

Registration for this event will close on June 18, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. This is a virtual training. Up to 13 virtual Continuing Education credits are allowed to be used towards the 32 credits required for recertification.

Cancellation Policy: Registrations may be transferred to another employee of the same agency upon written request to registration@mipeers.org. Cancellations must be received in writing at least 12 days prior to the date of the training. Failure to cancel registration within the allotted time will result in registration fees being forfeited. Attendance Policy: You must attend the entire training. If you are more than 10 minutes late you will not be allowed to attend as part of the CE requirements. Please note there is absolutely NO driving during the training. If you are driving while attending the training, you will be removed from the training for your own safety. Training guidelines must be read, signed, and returned back to the office before a zoom link is sent to the participant. Attendees must follow the training guidelines.
