Once a taboo subject, the public conversation about menopause has opened up in recent years—but the mental health aspects remain undiscussed. This presentation is designed for peer workers, community health workers, recovery coaches, or anyone who provides support to women and people ages 35 – 55. We will learn about the vital importance of person-centered, gender-inclusive menopause support tailored to the unique needs of this critical phase of life. Participants will receive a Menopause Map, a plan designed to assist in navigating midlife and beyond with dignity, respect, and access to appropriate care and support.

Learning Objectives:

  • Stages of the Menopause Transition.
  • How menopause impacts the mind/brain.
  • Support peers in identifying changes in how their medications are working and encourage informed conversations with providers.
  • Learn about early onset of perimenopause and how to support neurodivergent peers or others who may experience perimenopause earlier than expected.
  • Deepen your awareness of how trauma, neurodivergence, autoimmune conditions, and reproductive history can shape someone’s menopause experience, allowing for more individualized, trauma-informed support.
  • Identify key warning signs: Increase your ability to recognize and respond to concerns like sleep disruption, brain fog, mood changes, suicidality, or first-time altered states, and connect peers to appropriate supports.
  • Navigating contact with medical professionals, many of whom receive little to no training in menopause. Help peers prepare for appointments, ask questions, and advocate for themselves within systems that may lack menopause knowledge.
  • Strategies to avoid “diagnostic overshadowing” and learn how to support peers in having their physical and hormonal experiences taken seriously, rather than dismissed as purely mental health issues.
  • Understanding menopausal hormone therapy and how it can help with mental health and overall well-being.

Trainer:

Leah Harris, MA, has been a lived experience educator and peer trainer for 25 years, with a focus on trauma-informed care, person-centered care, burnout prevention, and peer-led innovations. After experiencing an extremely difficult onset of menopause in her early forties, and enormous challenges accessing appropriate care, Leah became committed to sharing with the community what she has learned on the intersection between menopause and mental health. Leah is also a certified Menopause Educator with the Menopause Experts’ Group (MEG). She has presented on menopause and psychosis at the World Hearing Voices Congress and ISPS-US and has been a guest on the Depth Work Podcast. Leah is the Board President of Hearing Voices Network USA and co-facilitates a monthly women and nonbinary-centered Hearing Voices group.
