Workshop | COVID-19 and the Disability Community: Lessons learned and Advocacy Moving Forward

Presented By

Kristen Milefchik, MSW

Description

The presentation will begin with an introduction to Disability Rights Michigan (DRM), a description of what we do, and the specific role of the Vaccine Advocacy team.

The presentation will give a general overview of the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on individuals with disabilities and the lessons we have learned from the pandemic, citing research from a variety of sources. This section will also cite some of the information DRM has received through their COVID-19 vaccine survey.

It will then describe some of the changes that have been proposed, and that have already been made, to address the access issues around vaccinations and their implications on future healthcare delivery.

Next, the presentation will discuss advocacy resources for peers and others, including organizations and entities who are already doing work around improving access to vaccines and other healthcare services for individuals with disabilities, as well as other marginalized populations. This section of the presentation will go into more detail about some of the work DRM and our partnering organizations have been doing, as well as some of the results of that work. The presentation will finish by emphasizing the important role of peers to advocate for individuals who have vaccine and other healthcare access difficulties.
