Description

The Michigan Department of Corrections started utilizing Peer Recovery Coaches in 2021 inside the correctional facilities and in parole and probation offices.  Recovery Coaches instill hope and share their experiences by reducing stigma and providing care. This workshop will discuss the implementation of the programs including barriers and challenges, the unique needs of individuals under supervision of MDOC, and the transition to community providers for care. Recovery Coaches in both programs will discuss the support and services offered to individuals and share how this impacts not only the individual receiving services but MDOC staff and the community at large. The department’s mission of decreasing recidivism and helping individuals develop meaningful lives has become more likely with the implementation of Peer Recovery Coaches.
