Supporting Veterans: Understanding Military Culture and VA Services

About Session

This training provides essential knowledge for understanding military culture, terminology, and the unique challenges veterans face during their transition to civilian life.  Participants will gain insights into military language and customs, explore common reintegration difficulties, and become familiar with the various components and services within the Department of Veterans Affairs system.  This session equips peers with the cultural competency needed to better serve and support Veterans in the community.

Presented by:

Moe Armstrong is a decorated Vietnam war veteran serving in the Navy as a Medical Corpsman of the US Marine Corp. Moe lives in New Haven, Connecticut and is a Michigan Certified Peer Support Specialist. Moe is an artist, poet,  and musician. As the founder of Vet to Vet, a model of peer support, he has advocated for veterans with mental health and substance use conditions for over 40 years. His inspirational story of recovery has helped many individuals. Moe was presented with five medals including the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor Device for heroic achievement in combat and three ribbons by Senator Richard Blumenthal for his military services. Moe is an artist, poet, and musician sharing his creative energy on Facebook and other virtual platforms.

David Baker is a Desert Storm war Veteran of the U.S. Army. Dave lives in Battle Creek and is a Michigan Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) and Certified Peer Recovery Coach(CPRC).

Dave has been a peer for 16 years and started his journey volunteering 17 years ago as a Vet2Vet facilitator at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center. In 2012, he was hired as a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist at the Iron Mountain Veterans Administration in the Upper Peninsula.  In 2014, Dave returned to Battle Creek VAMC as a CPSS in an outpatient program. In 2018 he started working as a peer specialist and recovery coach for the Substance Abuse Residential Treatment Program (SARRTP) and has continued to work in this setting. Dave is also involved with a non-profit Hero’s and Shero’s Corner in Grand Rapids and Strength in Numbers out of the Genessee county area.

Eligible for 3.25 MDHHS Continuing Education credits.
