SUMMARY:Washtenaw- Second Edition Ethics and Boundaries for Peer Workers
DESCRIPTION:Note: This new training is only for individuals in their second renewal cycle of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) continuing education requirements. For the first recertification cycle\, Ethics and Boundaries for Peer Workers is required. \nTraining Overview: \nCertified peers across Michigan uphold the Peer Code of Ethics to protect both themselves and the people they serve. While some ethical dilemmas are clear-cut; others can be complex and unexpected. In this interactive training\, we’ll take a deep dive into the Peer Code of Ethics and unpack real-world scenarios that test professional judgement. Participants will learn practical strategies to set healthy boundaries\, navigate gray areas\, and confidently respond to ethical challenges. \nTraining Objectives:  \n\nCompare and contrast personal values with peer support values.\nExplore ethical scenarios using the Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) and Certified Peer Recovery Coach (CPRC) code of ethics.\nExamine personal boundaries considering workplace policies.\nIdentify barriers to self-care and methods to improve self-care.\n\nCoffee and lunch will be served at this training. \nRegistration: Please register below (on this site) using a credit or debit card\, which is the quickest way to confirm your attendance. \nONLY if you need to pay by check\, please complete this form (click here) and email it to: registration@mipeers.org. This workshop blends practical tools with compassionate insight to support peer professionals cultivating flexible\, compassionate response in our work with individuals experiencing addiction\, mental health challenges\, and/or crisis. \nParticipants will learn about: \n\nMatching interventions to the level of addiction or illness.\nInternal barriers and how they impact our connections.\nCultivating response flexibility.\nRemembering pathways and harm reduction.\nDeveloping and maintaining empathy through:\n\nTransformative listening.\nMindfulness and self-compassion.\nThe power of choice.\n\n\n\nWho should attend? \nPeer support specialists\, peer recovery coaches\, and anyone who works in a recovery oriented or person-centered space. \nAbout the Trainer: \nJose is a Certified Peer Support Specialist\, Certified Peer Recovery Coach\, and a state of Michigan Peer Trainer. With over a decade of experience in peer support\, Jose has facilitated trainings in Mental Health First Aid\, QPR (Question\, Persuade\, Refer)\, Emotional CPR\, and mindfulness-based programs for addiction recovery. He is deeply committed to helping individuals navigate recovery from substance use and mental health challenges\, offering trauma-sensitive and compassionate support rooted in lived experience. \nA person in long-term recovery from addiction\, mental health conditions\, trauma\, and poverty\, Jose is passionate about sharing his story to inspire hope and healing in others. He finds strength and connection through nature\, community\, and his two loyal Australian Shepherds\, Chiquis\, and Peques—his sunrise running partners on hidden trails. Jose believes he didn’t survive addiction for himself alone\, but to support others. DESCRIPTION:This training is designed to provide the foundation for individuals in recovery from mental health and substance use disorders to act in the national movement to elevate voices of lived experience. We will explore the history of stereotypes and stigma and how that has changed us in our experiences. We will also explore elements of hope and resiliency and how they function as a counterbalance to stigma.
