SUMMARY:Day-Long Self-Compassion Training for Peers in Crisis Settings
DESCRIPTION:Self-Compassion is the practice of befriending ourselves just the way we are. It gives us strategies to live fully through both the joys and the sorrows of our lives. It reminds us that all human beings struggle\, and we are not alone. It is a powerful tool for emotional resilience that teaches us to support ourselves with kindness and compassion instead of harshness and self-criticism. In this class we will explore why mindfulness is the foundation of self-compassion and how we can leverage these practices to live happier and more productive lives. \nIn peer-reviewed studies\, Mindful Self-Compassion has been shown to significantly increase compassion for self and others as well as life satisfaction. It has also been shown to decrease depression\, anxiety\, and stress. \nWhat you will learn: \n\nWhat self-compassion is\, the benefits\, and the research that supports it.\nThe three elements of Self-Compassion.\nThe myths of self-compassion.\nHow to motivate yourself with self-compassion instead of self-criticism.\nHow we cause ourselves unnecessary suffering and what to do about it.\n\nHow to prepare: \n\nWear loose comfortable clothing.\nHave a water bottle and snacks available.\nArrange to keep technology to a minimum.\nThere will be a 60-minute lunch break and two 15-minute Breaks.\nSuspend judgment and meet the day with curiosity.\n\nWhat’s included:  \n\nSelf-Compassion Participant Handbook.\nLinks to self-compassion meditations and practices.\n\nCarol Hendershot\, Exp RYT 500 Yoga Instructor\nCertified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Instructor\nCo-Founder\, Grand Rapids Center for Mindfulness \nCarol has been teaching Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) since 2008 and Mindful Self-Compassion classes since 2014. Through collaboration and self-reflection\, you’ll uncover and share pathways you may not have realized were part of your recovery. Join us for a session of discovery and connection. \nTraining Objectives: \n\nBetter understand many different groups that support multiple pathways.\nLearn about the history of mutual aid groups.\nSelf-discover all the pathways you have used to support your recovery.\nBe able to help the people you serve build a roadmap of their own unique recovery pathway.\n\nTrainers: \nAndrew Brown (BA\, CPRC\, CPRM) is a person in long-term recovery. He is also a trainer for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Peer Recovery Coach Curriculum. He is very passionate about a multiple pathways approach to recovery and dedicated to the concept of harm reduction for persons struggling with substance use disorders. \nPriscilla Shafor (BS\, CADC\, CPRM\, CPRC) is a person in long-term recovery. She is a trainer for the MDHHS Peer Recovery Coach Curriculum\, a Core Recovery Coach Academy and Ethics Trainer for Connecticut Community of Addiction Recovery (CCAR). SUMMARY:Marquette- Power With: Leading from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Peer support leadership is more about supervision and people management. Our lived experiences shape who we are\, how we interact with others and how we hold and share power with others in our communities. This workshop will introduce liberatory peer support leadership. Themes discussed will include common misconceptions about leadership culture\, navigating hierarchy in real life situations\, and the importance of leading from the heart and remaining rooted in our lived experiences. \nObjectives:\n• Participants will receive a nuanced introduction to liberatory peer leadership and its key elements.\n• Participants will identify their unique leadership voice and style and understand the importance of remaining rooted in their own lived experiences.\n• Participants will practice their own unique leadership voice and style using common scenarios related to supervision\, team management\, local community\, and immediate relationships. \nTrainer: Nze Okoronta\nNze is a harm reductionist\, facilitator\, and consultant. They are known for work surrounding crisis services\, public health impact and social policy. They provide consultation around crisis alternatives\, peer run respites\, peer run warmlines\, peer support supervision and harm reduction. Nze has past experiences in housing\, diversity\, equity and inclusion\, clinical substance abuse counseling\, and population specific SUD program development for Black and brown communities. \nNze is currently the Peer Services Program Director at SOAR Case Management Services Inc.\, overseeing Solstice House Peer Run Respite in Madison\, WI. They also work as a Technical Assistance Consultant for PRCoE (Peer Recovery Center of Excellence) and Harm Reduction Equity Consultant for PeerPride.
