DESCRIPTION:Peer Connections in Crisis emphasizes the value of lived experience and mutual support in crisis situations. This training teaches participants how peer support complements clinical services in crisis response. It equips peer supporters with essential tools and techniques that reduce tension or intensity. Emphasis is placed on creating sustainable\, healthy crisis support practices. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nDefinitions and types of crises along with common reactions.\nRole boundaries for relational crisis response.\nCrisis support skills that reduce tension or intensity.\nLived-experience–informed humility and trauma informed support responses.\nSelf-care and support after a crisis.\n\nCoffee and lunch will be served at this training. \nEligible for 6.5 MDHHS Continuing Education credits.  \nPlease note that a minimum of 12 participants is required for this training. If registration does not meet this minimum\, the session may be canceled. \nTrainers: \nDeborah Monroe is a CPSS\, CPRC and Community Health Worker. She has over 15 years of experience grounded in recovery\, connection\, and hope. She has provided state certification trainings within the Michigan Department of Corrections\, and supported individuals returning from incarceration\, she strengthened person-centered planning and is an independent facilitator in Oakland County. Deb is the lead trainer in providing crisis training on behalf of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Peer Services area. She established Michigan’s first Peer-run respite and has supported peers in a variety of crisis settings. Deb was appointed by two governors to three terms on the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission. Working alongside fellow peers\, participants will role model effective leadership strategies that promote collaboration\, advocacy\, and positive systems change. \nTogether\, participants will develop a shared vision for strengthening and advancing Michigan’s peer workforce. By the end of the training\, each participant will leave with an actionable leadership plan that outlines concrete next steps for using their skills\, experience\, and influence to make a meaningful impact within their organizations\, communities\, and the broader peer support movement across Michigan. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIdentify leadership behaviors that build trust and credibility.\nCreate an actionable plan for continuous leadership growth.\nFoster a culture of collaboration\, mutual support\, and shared leadership.\nCraft and communicate a clear mission that inspires hope.\n\nTrainers: \nDr. Jonathan P. Edwards is a social scientist\, public health professional\, Licensed Clinical Social Worker\, Certified Peer Specialist\, Certified Personal Medicine Coach\, and serves on the faculty of Columbia University School of Social Work and as a clinical instructor at Yale School of Medicine Program for Recovery and Community Health. He led the largest peer support workforce within the New York City Hospital system and significantly contributed to the development of the peer support workforce. Dr. Edwards has published research on job satisfaction and supervision practices; contributed to the development of National Practice Guidelines for Peer Support Specialists and Supervisors; presented research and practice nationally and internationally; served on a technical expert panel to develop National Model Standards for Peer Support Certification\, as well as a national recovery research agenda. He has received several awards and has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles\, book chapters\, and co-edited the recently published “What It Takes: Wisdom from Peer Support Specialists and Supervisors.”   \nJustin Volpe\, Senior Peer Support Coordinator\, National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) is an international consultant\, advocate\, and peer specialist based out of Miami\, FL. He has presented and trained mental health facilities and other organizations on trauma-informed care practices and used his life experiences as lessons to what appropriate care should look like from a community level. Previously before his role with NASMHPD\, Justin worked as a Jail Diversion Peer Liaison for the 11th Judicial Criminal Mental Health Project for 14 years. He has worked as a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist in Florida since 2008 and has extensive work experience in the community. Justin has supervised and coordinated thousands of engagements with participants with serious mental health and co-occurring issues in the criminal justice system. He has assisted in training 4\,000 Miami Dade Law Enforcement Officers in Crisis Intervention Team training. His passion for this work is based on bringing systems together locally and nationally while reducing stigma and advocating for the persons served. Justin has been in two PBS documentaries\, The Definition of Insanity (2020) with his experience with the Jail Diversion Program and the Ken Burns Documentary: “Hiding in Plain Sight” (2022) on youth mental health. DESCRIPTION:Note: This training is for peers who work in formal crisis settings including mobile crisis teams and crisis services units. \nAs more peer workers serve in crisis settings roles\, it is vital to understand crisis through a peer lens\, stay rooted in core peer support values and remain anchored in peer support competencies. This training provides information\, skills\, and practical applications that peer workers can use in various crisis settings. \nBy the end of the training\, participants will be able to:\n• Define crisis through a peer support model.\n• Apply core peer support values to crisis situations.\n• Practice trauma-informed responses to reduce traumatization of self and others.\n• Use cultural knowledge to create connections.\n• Develop communication skills to use during crisis situations.\n• Support self and others after a crisis has occurred. \nEligible for 19.5 continuing education credits. \nTrainers: \nDeborah Monroe\, CPSS\, CPRC\, CHW\, Advanced Level Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) Facilitator\, has over 15 years of experience grounded in recovery\, connection\, and hope. She has provided state certification trainings within the Michigan Department of Corrections\, and supported individuals returning from incarceration\, she strengthened person-centered planning and is an independent facilitator in Oakland County. Deb is the lead trainer in providing crisis training on behalf of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Peer services area. She established Michigan’s first peer-run respite and has supported peers in a variety of crisis settings. Deb was appointed by two governors to three terms on the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission. She is an advanced WRAP facilitator and provides statewide certification and continuing education training for Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) and Certified Peer Recovery Coaches (CPRC). \nGlynis Morris is a CPSS and MDHHS-CPRC with over a decade of experience in behavioral health. She recently retired after more than 10 years with Lincoln Behavioral Services in Redford\, Michigan\, where she facilitated groups on trauma and co-occurring disorders and served as a member of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) team. \nGlynis brings both professional expertise and lived experience to her work. She has trained CPSS and CPRC professionals across Michigan on human trafficking and trauma-informed healing\, offering a compassionate\, real-world perspective grounded in recovery and resilience. Her passion lies in giving back to individuals who feel hopeless after experiencing the cruelty of life and in walking alongside others as they rediscover strength\, purpose\, and healing. \nBreakfast and lunch will be served at this training. \nA limited number of hotel rooms are available at a discounted rate at the Doubletree Detroit Novi for training participants. \nTo reserve a room\, please use the booking link below and confirm that your arrival and departure dates are correct before completing your reservation.
