SUMMARY:Mindfulness and the Science of Habit Change
DESCRIPTION:We are creatures of habit. Research shows that more than 40% of the things we do each day are not decisions but habits. In this training\, we’ll start by looking at what habits are and then tackle the ways mindfulness can help us cultivate habits of wellbeing and break habits that are holding us back. \nMindfulness is a powerful tool to help us recognize and step out of autopilot. With mindfulness we can learn to use our knowledge of habit formation to create the habits we want and let go of the habits that aren’t serving us. \nWould you like to lessen or eliminate things like constantly checking social media\, procrastinating\, overeating\, or smoking? How about beginning or strengthening habits like eating well\, meditating\, or listening deeply? This training may be for you. \nAt the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe the habit loop of positive and negative reinforcement.\nPractice mindfulness meditation.\nDiscuss BJ Fog’s ABCs of Positive Habit Change.\nExplain how mindfulness can help us step out of autopilot.\nDiscuss how mindfulness approaches can help change unhelpful habit patterns.\nBuild healthy habits into your life.\n\nScientific research has consistently demonstrated that mindfulness: \n\nReduces stress\, anxiety\, and depression.\nImproves sleep and reduces symptoms of chronic illness.\nImproves confidence and self-acceptance.\n\nTrainer: \nCarol Hendershot\, RYT 500\nCertified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Instructor\nCo-Founder\, Grand Rapids Center for Mindfulness \nCarol has been teaching the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) since 2008 and has led hundreds of students through the program. SUMMARY:Meeting Difficult Emotions: Rewiring Your Brain for Happiness for Peers in Crisis Settings
DESCRIPTION:$25 Registration Fee. Eligible for 4 MDHHS Continuing Education Credits. Please see this link for flyer and registration. \nWe evolved to have a negativity bias. It’s been hardwired since we were in caves to save us from predators. Today\, however\, many of the lions and tigers in our lives are created by our thoughts and\nemotions. As Mark Twain once said\, “I have had many catastrophes in my life\, most of which never happened.” – Mark Twain \nTo create happiness\, and happiness first\, we must find healthy ways to work with our challenging thoughts and emotions. We’ll begin this workshop by discussing different strategies to defuse\ndifficult emotions and learn practices to bring us back to balance. In the second part of this workshop\, we will learn methods to rebalance our nervous system and rewire our brains for a more positive outlook. \nTrainer: Carol Hendershot

SUMMARY:Challenging Relationships & Caregiver Fatigue for Peers in Crisis Settings
DESCRIPTION:Eligible for 4 MDHHS Continuing Education Credits. $25 Registration Fee \nRelationships can be difficult. In this class you will learn about two different types of relational pain: the pain of disconnection and the pain of connection. \nThe pain of disconnection is something we are all familiar with. Our first reaction to conflict with family\, colleagues\, or acquaintances is often anger\, resentment\, and emotional distancing. These difficult emotions often conceal more subtle emotions and unmet needs that we didn’t realize were there. \nThe other type of relational discomfort\, the pain of connection\, can occur in caregiving situations simply because we are human. We are hardwired to connect\, cooperate\, and nurture one another. This makes our lives rich and rewarding but can also make us vulnerable to the empathic distress of feeling the suffering of others as our own. \nMindfulness and compassion skills can help us work with the discomfort caused by both types of relational pain. \nPlease see this link for more information and registration.

SUMMARY:Living Deeply – Discovering Your Values for Peers in Crisis Settings
DESCRIPTION:Eligible for 4 MDHHS Continuing Education Credits. $25 Registration Fee. \nAs we live with more mindfulness and self-compassion\, life begins to look different. We start to see the importance of living authentically from a place of alignment with our values. We might\nfeel the impulse to embark on a journey to discover what is most important to us. \nAlong the way\, we may also uncover internal and external obstacles that get in the way of our emotional health. This process can be fertile ground for growth if we can see these challenges\nthrough the eyes of mindfulness and self-kindness. \nIn this class\, we will review the principles of mindfulness and self-compassion and investigate how they can support us in living more deeply. Through guided reflection and writing\, we will examine our values and explore stumbling blocks that get in the way of living our best life. We will reflect on a difficult time from the past to see how it might hold important lessons and see what we can learn by sharing our stories with others. \nTrainer: Carol Hendershot \nPlease use this link to register.

SUMMARY:Motivating Yourself with Kindness Instead of Criticism for Peers in Crisis Settings
DESCRIPTION:Eligible for 4 MDHHS Continuing Education Credits. $25 Registration Fee. \nWhen we first sense the need to make a change\, our impulse is often to respond negatively and criticize ourselves. We go over all the things we’ve done wrong and how we should have done\nthem differently. But that’s a poor strategy for creating meaningful change—research shows that instead\, we are much more likely to get results through kindness and encouragement. \nIn this class we will review the principles of self-compassion and then learn the practice of loving-kindness to cultivate an open and loving heart. Next\, we’ll examine how mindfulness\, loving-kindness\, and compassion go hand in hand and yet differ from each other in many ways. In this training\, students will explore self-criticism\, why it is so pervasive\, and how it often sabotages our attempts to change. Last\, we’ll investigate how care for oneself and self-kindness are effective approaches to positive transformation. \nTrainer: Carol Hendershot \nPlease see this link for registration.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Self-Compassion for Peers in Crisis Settings
DESCRIPTION:Eligible for 4 MDHHS Continuing Education Credits. $25 Registration Fee. \nSelf-Compassion is the practice of befriending ourselves just the way we are. It gives us strategies to live fully through both the joys and the sorrows of our lives. It reminds us that all human beings struggle\, and we are not alone. It is a powerful tool for emotional resilience that teaches us to support ourselves with kindness and compassion instead of harshness and self-criticism.\nIn this class we will explore why mindfulness is the foundation of self-compassion and how we can leverage these practices to live happier and more productive lives. \nIn peer-reviewed studies\, Mindful Self-Compassion has been shown to significantly increase compassion for self and others as well as life satisfaction. It has also been shown to decrease depression\, anxiety\, and stress. \nTrainer: Carol Hendershot \nPlease use this link to register.

SUMMARY:Meeting Difficult Emotions: Rewiring Your Brain for Happiness for Peers in Crisis Settings
DESCRIPTION:Eligible for MDHHS Continuing Education Credits. See this link for flyer and registration. \nWe evolved to have a negativity bias. It’s been hardwired since we were in caves to save us from predators. Today\, however\, many of the lions and tigers in our lives are created by our thoughts and emotions. As Mark Twain once said\, “I have had many catastrophes in my life\, most of which never happened.” – Mark Twain To create happiness\, and happiness first\, we must find healthy ways to work with our challenging thoughts and emotions. We’ll begin this workshop by discussing different strategies to defuse difficult emotions and learn practices to bring us back to balance. In the second part of this workshop\, we will learn methods to rebalance our nervous system and rewire our brains for a more positive outlook. \nTrainer: Carol Hendershot
